Rose records "Awopbopaloobopawopbamboom!" Little Richard choked at the September 1955 recording session with Fats Domino's band. During a break, Bumps and Richard went to a local hang-out, where Richard leapt on stage, a-wop-bam-booming an obscene ditty called "Tutti Frutti". The lyrics were cleaned up at the studio by Dorothy LaBostrie (substituting for 'Tutti Frutti, good booty' the Dada poetry of 'Tutti frutti, aw rootie'), but then Richard wouldn't play in front of her. Bumps pleaded. So he faced a wall and - voice raw from recording - all hell broke loose. |
